Wrestling Losses Three to Graduatiopn
Seniors 2X All-American, David Rivera, 2X Academic All-American
Adam Neesby and Jaime Hernandez all said goodbye as they closed
their academic and athletic careers at ERAU today (May 7, 2005)
at the Spring 2005 Commencement Graduation Ceremony held on
the Eagles lower athletic field. “Today was a bitter-sweet
day for our program. We will have to step up in a lot of areas
in attempts to fill the huge voids that these three gentlemen
will leave as they begin the next phase of their careers. They
represent a tremendous amount of leadership both on the mat
and in the classroom for our program and we will miss them
all” stated Head Wrestling Coach Petty.

the most inspiring performance throughout the year.
Robert Charlton (AE, JR) the 2005 Western Region Heavy weight
champion, finished 8th at the NAIA National championships and

in his actions; the term “cowboy up” comes to mind
when thinking of terms to describe Charlton’s performance
this past season. “Being asked to go up in a weight class
for the team and performing very well while sometimes giving
up more than 60 pounds; doing so while injured and never complaining,
makes Robert the easy choice for this award.” Charlton
owns the career All-Time record for “most 3 point near

Most Improved Award
This award is given to the athlete who shows the most improvement
form one season to another or from the beginning to the end

Coach
John Petty is honored by NAIA and by ERAU for outstanding year
The ERAU wrestling team finished 6th this season at the NAIA
Nationals in Sioux City, Iowa. It was not the picture perfect
finish to a great season, but it was another vast improvement
from the years past. Not only did the Eagles finish 2 places
higher than in 2004, they also took home the Champions of Character
award. This award means a lot to ERAU as it has been a tough
road for Coach Petty, rebuilding and putting the Wrestling
team back on track.
Embry Riddle is a challenging school and the biggest goal
for the Athletic Department and the Administration in general
is to retain and graduate all student-athletes. This goal was
somewhat lost in the recent years and it became more of a
place for athletes without the student in the lead. However,
Coach Petty has come in and not only put the emphasis back
on academics and character but also managed to do all this
while still finishing the best ERAU ever has in school history.
Along with being named NAIA Far West Region Coach of the Year,
Coach Petty was also the month of March's
winner
of the Service Excellence Award. Coach Petty and the Eagle
wrestling
team won the Western Regional Wrestling tournament. This
was the second time in the school's history for this level
of victory.
He is greatly deserving of these awards as he has been
instrumental in improving the team's character and academic
performance
without compromising their athletic achievement.
We all look forward to the future of ERAU Wrestling and what
Coach Petty and the student-athletes can do in the years to
come. GO Eagles! Men’s
Wrestling takes home 6th place at NAIA Nationals
The Men’s Wrestling team had an outstanding season as
they improved two places from their 2004 finish. With excellent
performances from many of the Eagles best, the team finished
their 2004-2005 campaign in 6th place, only 2 points away from
the top 5. “The final standings are in and even though
we fell short of our ultimate goal, we had a great season,” commented
Coach Petty after the tournament.
Despite falling just shy of the ultimate goal of winning it
all, the Eagles did garner the coveted Champions of Character
award, proving that they are not only outstanding wrestlers,
but also upstanding human beings. “This award means a
lot to us. We have talked all season about sportsmanship and
character and these young men have consistently shown in tournament
after tournament that respect, honor, virtue and integrity
are core values to this school and especially this program.”
The Eagles will continue pushing for the National Title and
have already started training for next season. Coach Petty
is already actively recruiting and as always preparing for
what the future may hold. Returning for 2006 will be 10 eligible
2005 National Qualifiers with only the loss (although tough
to face) of wrestlers David Rivera and
Jaime Hernandez. The squad will be returning 5 All-Americans,
including Gordo Villaescusa, Richard Byrd, Bob Charlton, Tyler
Moran, and Joffre Lander, who had a breakout tournament placing
2nd in the 184 pound weight class. “We look to continue
to improve and keep moving towards our destination. I believe
that we are a top 3 team and next season we will be aiming
for the top spot as a team in 2006.

Eagles
look ahead to Nationals, ranked #5 in the country (February
23rd, 2005)
With the last poll of the Wrestling season before Nationals,
the NAIA has placed ERAU at #5 behind Lindenwood, Montana State-Northern,
Dana and Cumberland. The Eagles have faced Montana and Dana
already this year, losing both very closely. The team will
be looking to improve on the #8 final position from last year
as many of the Eagles are projected to win individual titles
in Sioux City.
Along with the team ranking, the Eagles also have many outstanding
individual wrestlers who will be fighting to win it all. In
the 125 pound class, Richard Byrd is ranked #3; in the 149
pound class, Tyler Moran is ranked #1 and will be favored to
win it all; in the 165 pound class, Matt Howard is #7; in the
174 pound class, David Rivera is #1 and looking to take home
first place; in the 184 pound class, Joffre Lander is #7; in
the 197 pound class, Jaime Hernandez is #7 and in the Heavy
Weight class, Robert Charlton is #4. For further rankings and
other teams individual standings, please visit:

The Eagles are preparing for a tough challenge, but feel as
if they have a very good chance to bring home a National Title.

Wrestling beats Menlo College, winning Regionals for 1st
time in four years (February 19th, 2005)
The Men's Wrestling team defeated defending Regional Champions
Menlo College to take home1st place in the Region II (Western

Days and Counting (February 8, 2005)
The Men's Wrestling team is counting down the days until Regionals,
which will be held this year at Menlo College in Northern California.
The ERAU wrestling squad has had an outstanding season and
is currently ranked #5 in the country with a fantastic chance
of not only taking the region, but winning the National Championship
as well.
The Eagles will be heading to Menlo with 8 of their wrestlers
already qualifying for Nationals and will look to qualify 4
more to get to the max of 12 wrestlers vying for the National
title. With 7 of the Eagles ranked nationally, they have an
outstanding chance of winning it all. "If our athletes
come with their "A" game, we will definitely be in
the hunt," said Coach Petty on the ability of his wrestlers.
With men like Tyler Moran, David Rivera, Gordo Villaescusa,
Calvin DeVault, Richard Byrd, Joffre Lander and Bob Charlton
all Nationally ranked, the Eagles are heading to Menlo with
confidence and an eye on the future and the biggest prize of
them all, the NAIA National Title.
Men's
Wrestling places 4th at Missouri Valley Open, look to improve
at Nationals (January 29th, 2005)
The Men's Wrestling team headed to Missouri for their last
regular season match of the season before Regionals begin at
Menlo College on February 19th. Despite not wrestling three
of the Eagles starters, the ERAU squad managed to place 4th
in the tournament and had many outstanding performance from
their wrestlers in a tournament that saw over 300 young men
competing. As has been consistent all season, Tyler Moran
was the man to beat in Missouri, coming in to the tournament
ranked #1 and again leaving the tournament #1, in his weight
class and also as the Outstanding Wrestler for the whole competition.
Other Eagle Wrestlers that placed were Gordo Villaescusa
(141), who placed in the Top 12 by going 2-2, Jamie Hernandez
(197)
and Adam Neesby (174) placed in the Top 8 by going 2-2
and 3-2, respectively. Joffre Lander (184) finished 6th by
going 3-3, David Rivera (174) finished 3rd by winning 4
of his 5 matches and Richard Byrd (125) finished 2nd by winning
3 of his 4 matches.
And, finishing perfect for the Eagles,
with an impressive 35-4 overall record this season was Tyler
Moran, who won all 5 of his matches, placing 1st in the 149
weight class. Tyler who has recently set the ERAU record
for most wins in a season and what may be even more impressive
is all of his four losses have come at the hands of ranked
Division I opponents (one of which he recently beat). "He
is on par to win it all in Iowa at the National Tournament
and could even be named the Outstanding Wrestler for 2004-2005,"
commented Coach Petty on Tyler's amazing performance this
season. "And the best part of it all, is that he is also getting
it done in the classroom." Tyler ended the fall semester with
a 3.8 and is having a breakout year for the Eagles.
The Eagles are now preparing for the Regional Tournament that
will be held at Menlo College on February 19th.
Men's
Wrestling honors four All-American seniors (January 26th,
2004) The Embry Riddle Men’s Wrestling team honored four seniors
in a match against Pima College. All four of which have elevated
the program during their years at ERAU as each of them garnered
All-American honors. Adam Neesby honored as an Academic All-American
and Tyler Moran, David Rivera and Jaime Hernandez honored as
NAIA All-Americans. The night began with Coach John Petty introducing
the outstanding resumes and honors of each of the wrestlers
and awarding them with a plaque that highlighted their contribution
to the ERAU squad over the last four years.
After the celebration of the four incredible seniors, the match
began at the 174 weight class with Danny Eller returning to
action after shoulder surgery slowed him down. However, it
was obvious that not even surgery could stop Danny as he pinned
his opponent Dynays Voyuyskyy in just 1:21. The next match
proved again that ERAU was ready for Pima as Jaime Hernandez
defeated Travis De Grout 21-4. The following 3 matches were
won by ERAU through forfeits by Pima with HWT Bob Charlton,
125 pound Richard Byrd and 133 pound newcomer Dominic Murphy
earning points for the Eagles. The Eagles dominated the next
two matches with ease as Gordo Villaescusa, ranked #5 in the
nation pinned Brett Vibber in only 2:07 and Tyler Moran, ranked
#1 in the nation pinned Adam Hogan in 4:57. It was with this
pin that Tyler Moran surpassed the ERAU record for most wins
in a career and is now #1 in school history. The final regulation
match of the night ended with 157 pound Matt Howard pinning
his opponent Jesus Jimenez in 3:34.
In exhibition action David Rivera, ranked #1 in the nation
defeated James Varner, 8-2. In the final match of the night,
two time Academic All-American Adam Neesby, ranked #3 in
the region pinned Rigg’n Goslin in only 1:50 to close
out the match and prove decisively that the powerful ERAU
Eagles
rightfully deserve their #6 in the nation ranking. The
Eagles went undefeated across the board to win the match..
The Eagles will head to Missouri this Saturday to compete
in
the Missouri
Valley Open as they prepare for Nationals and look to win
it all.

Men's
Wrestling splits in California (January 21-22, 2005)
The Men's Wrestling team has been on a whirlwind of matches
and for the most part has dominated the performances. So as
they traveled to California to face tough Division I competition,
they were prepared for what they knew would be an incredibly
tough fight. To make the stakes even higher, one of the teams
the Eagles would be wrestling is Coach Petty's Alma Mater,
Fresno State. Although the ERAU squad may not have done as
well as they had hoped against the Division I competition,
it was
consistency from Moran and Villaescusa that shines rays of
hope for the NAIA
National
Tournament.
The first match of the weekend was against Oregon State University
with the Eagles losing 34-9. With the Eagles earning their
points from Gordo Villaescusa (141), Tyler Moran (149) and
Jaime hernandez (197). The second match was unfortunately very
similar
to the first with the Eagles losing to Fresno State University
35-9. Again it was Gordo and Tyler recording wins for the Eagles
proving that regardless of the Division I status, these two
are the real deal.
The third and fourth matches for the Eagles proved to be a
little more fruitful with wins coming from a forfeit from
Lassen College and a very close victory over NAIA rival Menlo
College.
The match against Menlo College was a very close one with the
final match of the determining the final outcome. The Eagles
had beaten Menlo previously this year and looked to continue
to dominate their NAIA opponents as they prepare for Nationals.
This time the Eagles brought home wins from Richard Byrd (125),
Gordo Villaescusa (141), Tyler Moran (149), David Rivera (174)
and Joffre Lander (184). Again it was Gordo and Tyler who walked
away from the weekend undefeated.
The next Eagles match will be at home against Pima College
on Wednesday, January 26th at 7:00 pm. It will be the last
home match for Gordo Villaescusa, Tyler Moran, Jaime Hernandez,
David Rivera and Adam Neesby.

Men's
Wrestling split, defeat Western Wyoming, lose to Western
State (January 7th, 2005)
With victories from Richard Byrd, Tyler Moran, Tyler Price,
Gordo Villaescusa and Calvin DeVault, the Eagle wrestling squad
easily defeated western Wyoming by a score of 33-15. This,
even after tough competition against the Air Force Academy
and Air Force Prep, continues to prove that the ERAU team is
comprised of elite athletes and tough competitors. After this
huge win, they prepared for another tough battle against Division
II powerhouse Western State.
It was victories by Matt Trout and Cody Mumma of Western
State that allowed the squad to hold off Embry-Riddle 19-18
at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colorad0.
With the victory, Western is now 3-0 in duals on the season.
After ERAU's Calvin Devault scored a major decision victory at 165
pounds to cut the Western lead to 12-11, Trout responded with a 8-4 victory
over NAIA
top-ranked David Rivera at 174 and pushed the Western advantage to 15-11.
ERAU's Joffre Lander responded with a last-second 5-4 victory at 184
to again cut the WSC lead to one at 15-14, but this time Mumma responded with
an 8-6 victory at 197 and the lead went back to four at 18-14.
In the final match of the night, ERAU's Robert Charlton (Hwt.) could
only scored a 7-3 decision and Western won the dual 19-18.
R.C. LaHaye (141) and Zach Lee (157) also were victorious for the Mountaineers.
Both teams will take part in Saturday’s 15th annual Tracy Borah Invitational.
The wrestling starts at 10 a.m., with the Finals set for 7 p.m.

Men's

(January 6th, 2005)
The Wrestling team drove north through snow and ice to face
tough opponents, the Air Force Academy and the Air Force Prep
in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The site was near the sacred
and hallowed ground of wrestling at the Olympic Training Center.
However, it was ERAU that proved who the champions were that
day as they beat both teams handedly.

Moran,
Villaescusa and Rivera compete at the Midlands Tournament
(December 30th, 2004)
Tyler Moran, Gordo Villaescusa and David Rivera were invited
to compete in the prestigious Midlands Invitational that is
annually held in Evanston, Illinois. This is an invitation
only tournament and brings in quality wrestlers from all over
the country, from Division I all the way to NAIA. All three
showed very well at the tournament, proving with conviction
why they had been invited.
Gordo (141) won his first match in decisive fashion showing
his dominance on the mat before losing his other two to very
high ranking wrestlers. David also showed well by winning two
of his four matches. However, it was Tyler who was on fire
coming in to the tournament ranked #11, but easily beating
opponents ranked much higher. He started by defeating Shane
Dintelsmen from Eastern Illinois 3-0 and then defeated Anthony
Baza in the last few seconds of the match by a score of 5-4.
Tyler was on the verge of placing but lost a very close match
to #3 ranked James Woodoff of Penn State.
"Tyler showed amazingly
well this weekend, placing in the top 12 at a very prestigious
tournament. All the guys showed what they were capable of
this weekend, wrestling against some of the best wrestlers
in the country and competing very well," said Coach Petty.
These three standouts will join the rest of the squad on January
6th in Colorado Springs as they face the Air Force Academy
JV team.
Men's
Wrestling sets new standard as they beat Southern Oregon
(#4) for the first time in history (December 18th, 2004)
With the match tied at 19-19, it was Heavy Weight Bob Charlton
(#5) who would be able to change history for the Eagles as
they faced #4 Southern Oregon in Reno, Nevada. Bob, as usual,
was
up for the challenge and with a decision, he elevated ERAU
to victory 22-19. In this very exciting match that was close
from the beginning, the Eagles also earned points in decisions
from, Richard Byrd (#7), Gordo Villaescusa (#5), Tyler Moran
(#2), David Rivera (#1) and Jaime Hernandez (#8).
In other exhibition action, Joey Valente won his match by
a decision and Adam Neesby took on a defeated the #5 wrestler
in the country. The Eagles are currently ranked 6th in the
country and #1 in the West Region.
It was the next day that the Eagles continued to challenge
themselves to face the best in the country and proved time
and time again that they rank right up there with the best
from all Divisions, including Division I. In the Tournament
of Champions, also held in Reno, the Eagles placed #14 behind
a list of huge wrestling powerhouses, such as Oklahoma State
(#1), Arizona State (#2) and Fresno State (#3). Again, Tyler
Moran proved to be one of the best wrestlers in the country
as he defeated ASU's Patrick Williams, a Division I wrestler
who is currently ranked #5 in the nation. He revenged
his earlier lose to the #3 and #2 seeded wrestlers in the country.
Overall, the ERAU wrestling squad showed very well in this
highly prestigious national tournament with much of the team
finishing in the Top 8.
Look for the Eagles to be back in action on January 6th in
Colorado Springs as they face the Air Force Academy (JV) team
at 5:30.
Men's
Wrestling beat Boise State Wrestling Club and Bridgewater
College in Great Western Duals (December 4th, 2004)
The ERAU Wrestling left immediately after their last home
match against #3 ranked Montana State Northern and boarded
a plane for Reno, Nevada where they would continue this marathon
of wrestling matches against the Boise State Wrestling Club
and Bridgewater College, from Minnesota. Despite the whirlwind
of events, the Eagles came out ono fire and managed to win
both matches decisively.
With victories from Richard Byrd (9-7), Gordo Villaescusa
(13-3), Tyler Price (Overtime), David Rivera (13-1), Joffre
Lander (6-1) and the biggest of the night coming from Bob Charlton
as he defeated last years reigning Division I, PAC-10 Champion
11-4, the Eagles beat Boise State-WC 28-15.
In the second match of the evening, the Eagles beat Bridgewater
College 24-11. It was with victories from Richard Byrd (5-4),
Gordo Villaescusa (3-2), Scott Speakman (pin :57), Tyler Price
(9-3), Adam Neesby (6-0), Jaime Hernandez (5-2) and another
big win for Bob Charlton (10-8 in overtime) that gave the Eagles
the second win of the night.

Men's
Wrestling loses two very close matches, against #3 and
#4 in the country (December 2nd, 2004)
Day Two of the Eagle dual proved to be another exciting display
of wrestling as Montana State defeated Dana College by a score
of 23-19. The day would then see Dana College take on host
ERAU which proved to be another very close match. With the
Eagles earning points from Gordo Villaescusa, Tyler Moran,
David Rivera and Jaime Hernandez, but it was not quite enough
as Dana College held on to win the match 21-17.
The Eagles would then face the #3 team in the country and
the reigning NAIA National Champions next as they were set
to wrestle the Lights of Montana State University. This was
set to be a tough match up for both teams as Montana came in
with three #1 wrestlers and ERAU proudly boasts a #1 and a
#2. The highlight match of the night was a fight for the #1
spot in the 149 weight class as #1 Anthony Haukenberry from
MSU wrestled ERAU's Tyler Moran who was ranked #2 in the Nation.
It was Moran who proved to be the better wrestler as he beat
Haukenberry, 4-1 and is sure to now be the #1 NAIA wrestler
in the 149 pound weight class.
The remainder of the match was well fought, with MSU earning
points off two technical fall decisions. The match lived up
to all that was expected when two top ranked teams meet up,
but it was Montana State University that edged out the victory,
23-21, but not before Bob Charlton (HWT) pinned Brian Fritchman
in only :30 seconds in the first period. It was a quality afternoon
of wrestling, as expected when so many powerful teams are competing.

and very close, as the #1 MVC Vikings went up against the #6
ERAU Eagles. With victories from Tyler Price, Tyler Moran,
David Rivera, Joffre Lander and Bob Charlton, the Eagles earned
15 points, but it was not quite enough as the Vikings managed
to earn 19 points after four wins and one pin.

ERAU Wrestling Rolls to victory in Southern California
Dual
Junior, Robert Charlton scored the only pin of the day for
the now 2-0 Eagles after defeating the Pac 10 powerhouse Cal
State Fullerton “B” squad before a crowd of 1637
in the Titan gym. Major decisions were earned by three Eagle
teammates; senior, Tyler Moran, sophomore, Matt Howard and
freshmen, Ryan Vidaurri who all enjoyed a good home coming
back to southern California. Other Eagles claiming victories
were freshmen, Richard Byrd and Tyler Price, while sophomore,
Joffre Lander and junior, Jaime Hernandez were winners by default.
(see results below) The Eagles flew without sophomore standout
Gordo Villaescusa who is out with an injury.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow (Saturday, November 20,
2004) to compete in the Fullerton Open which will play host
to several Pac 10 and other Division I teams in the southwest.
Last year, Charlton was the lone medallist for the Eagles placing
3rd while he and others look to improve their finish from a
year ago.
#6 EMBRY-RIDDLE 35 vs. CAL STATE FULLERTON-B 18 (Official
Score)
The
ERAU Men's Wrestling squad improved their dual meet record
to 2-0 as they defeated the Titans of Cal State Fullerton
37-13. Though many of the Eagle wrestlers brought home
points and ultimately a victory for the team, two of the
men stand
out as top performers on the day. The first one is freshman
Ryan Vidaurri (133), who hails from California and who
obviously went on the trip back home with something to prove
as he
defeated Chris Sanchez. The second standout for ERAU was
Bob Charlton, a junior from Billings, Montana who moved
up to the Heavy Weight class for the match and still managed
to dominate as he wrestled Dan Ought in a very impressive,
high tempo match which was cut short when Charlton pinned
Ought in 3 minutes and 35 seconds.

Wrestling
Eagles
Take Flight (November 3rd, 2004)
The Nationally ranked (#6) Eagle Wrestling team started the
season with an impressive and decisive victory (56-0) over
Glendale College of
Phoenix,
AZ. The Eagles racked up 6 of its 11 victories by pins, 2 by
technical fall, 1 major decision and 2 decisions. One of the
most exciting aspects of the match was that four of the six
pins were issued by freshmen, (Ryan Vidaurri 133,
Matthew
Howard and Tyler Price 157, and Calvin Devault 165).
Coach Petty in his second year at the helm of this powerful
squad was very excited about the dominating start, “it
is great to start your career with a win, but to begin with
a pin is awesome. I was amazed to see it occur four times
in our first match. I am really excited for our young guys.” To
see four freshman come out and implement so many tactics and
skills is very encouraging for the Eagles, who have their eyes
on the National title in March.
Another heartwarming story from the evening came when Ric
Carreon decisively beat his opponent in his first
and last match of the season due to his
Marine
Corps
Reserve
Unit
being
deployed to Iraq in mid November. Sgt. Carreon won his match
with a
first period 40-second fall. “We wish Ric the best
and he and his family will be in our thoughts as we eagerly
await
his safe return,” said Coach Petty. The night was
extremely successful as the Eagles proved that all their
hard work had paid off and they now look ahead to continuing
down this path of victories.
