Gordo Villaescusa- 141
The ERAU Men's Wrestling staff has chosen Gordo
Villaescusa as the Featured Athlete selection. Gordo,a sophomore
hailing from Nogales, Arizona is a Global Security and Intelligence
major. His outstanding performance on the mat as well as he
consistent effort and positive attitude off the mat has been
a catalyst in the early success the Eagles have experienced
thus far in 2004. So far, Gordo has accumulated an undefeated
5-0 record and placed 1st in the recent ERAU Under 20 Tournament.
Gordo is a returning All-American and has continued
to illustrate respect, honor and commitment to his team and
his athletic and academic excellence. On and off the mat, Gordo
is an exemplary student-athlete and has been a driving force
in the success both in the wrestling room and in the classroom
for the Eagles. He is currently ranked #1 in the Region and
#7 in the Nation, which is no surprise for a well honored wrestler
like Gordo who was a four time High School State Champion in
Arizona. Gordo is well on course to adding four time collegiate
All-American to his already very impressive athletic resume.
Ric
Carreon: SR- HWT
Ric is a senior studying Security, Technology
and Globalization. He is originally from Los Angeles, California
but came to Embry Riddle after serving for the US Marine Corps.
Ric was a two time state placer and has been an incredible
leader for the Eagles during his career at ERAU. Ric competed
in his first and last match of the season during a recent match
against Glendale Community College. Ric won decisively, pinning
his opponent in 40 seconds showing his true fight and intensity.
Ric will be leaving the team because he has been called back
to duty for the Marines and will be leaving in a few weeks
to report for training before being deployed to Iraq.
His leadership and intensity will be greatly
missed. We all wish Ric the best of luck and will keep he and
his family in our thoughts as we await his safe return.
Adam Neesby
SR- 174lb. Returning Academic All-American
Morgan Scott
SO- 165lb.
Both of these wrestlers have made an impact both
on and off the mat since they have been student-athletes
at ERAU. Adam who is an Academic All-American has been a leader
for the Eagles since he was a freshman and has shown though
his academic prowess that he is a strong contributor to the
program. Morgan is a well-rounded young man from Cottonwood
who will undoubtedly continue to produce for the Eagles,
both
in the realm of athletics but also in the areas of community
involvement and leadership. Both of these young men have
been honored as featured athletes for their contributions to
the
athletic program at ERAU and for their award of the 2004 "Champions
of Character" scholarship in honor of the NAIA's commitment
to education through athletics.
Tyler Moran
SR- 149lb. Returning All-American
Rank #2 in the Nation
2003-04 Team Soaring Eagle Award (MVP) Recipient
Tyler has proven to be a wonderful asset for the Eagle Wrestling
team and it is through his daily display of leadership by example
that he is this weeks choice for Athlete of the Week. Moran
has made it is point to take many of the Freshmen under his
wing and help to integrate them into the program. He was recently
voted "hardest worker" by the coaching staff during
pre-season conditioning. "Tyler is very focused and I
expect him to have a very productive senior campaign on and
off the mat. I know he will give his all," said Coach
Petty of this exceptional wrestler.
The Eagles Finish in the Elite
Eight at the NAIA National Championships -
Rivera (174 lbs) and Moran (149 lbs) finish 2nd & 3rd respectively
The Eagles returned to familiar
territory after placing in the top 10 at the NAIA National
Wrestling Championships. "Finishing 8th after last years
12th place performance was a step to return the program to
its winning tradition" stated Coach Petty. The Eagles
also improved the number of All-Americans this year by one
to 5, although they had fewer wrestlers (7) to qualify for
the tournament. "Without a doubt, this has been a year
of transition for this program. You name it, new coach, new
philosophy, two All-Americans leaving the team, five national
qualifiers out of the lineup, etc. These are all excuses
that I told our team and staff we would not except for a
mediocre performance and they met the challenge. I am extremely
pleased with our performance in this year of transition,
now the expectations rise from this point on."
In his third trip to the National
Championships, David Rivera won his first ever match and
ended up reaching the finals and placing 2nd. "David
had a great tournament and wrestled the way he is capable
of wrestling. He peaked at the right time and came one match
away from being a national champion this year." Tyler
Moran (149 lbs) was defeated in the semifinals by the #1
ranked wrestler in his division, he then fought back to capture
3rd place. Anthony Archuleta (133 lbs) clamed his second
All-American title placing 5th, while Adalberto Villaescusa
(141 lbs) and Robert Charlton (197 lbs) each placed 7th. "It
showed tremendous courage of our guys after being defeated
in some tough close matches to come back and win their final
match of the year."
Other award winners at the
National Championships were Academic All-American, Adam Neesby
who boasts a team high 3.8 GPA and Joffre Lander who won
the Character of Champion Award for his performance on and
off the mat.
The Eagles will now begin to
train with Embry-Riddle Wrestling Club for Freestyle and
Greco. The club is open to the public from ages 6 and up.
The groups and practice times are: Tuesday & Thursday
evenings from 6-8 pm. For more details contact Coach
Petty.
Eagle Wrestling Ranked #10
in the Nation
The Embry-Riddle Wrestling
Team broke into the top 10 in the final release of NAIA National
Rankings. It took first year head coach, John Petty and his
young squad the entire regular season to achieve this accomplishment.
After placing 3rd at the Western Regional tournament behind
#5 Menlo College and #6 Southern Oregon, the Eagles were
recognized as the #10 team in the Nation heading into the
NAIA National Championships.
The Eagles have four nationally
ranked individual wrestlers; #2 - Tyler Moran (JR), #4 -
David Rivera (JR), #5 - Robert Charlton (SO), and #7 - Joffre
Lander (FR). Additionally noteworthy is the fact that Anthony
Archuleta (SO) has ranked as high as #5, but is being hampered
by injuries, and Richard Byrd (FR) has beaten the #2 and
#8 ranked wrestlers in his division this season. "All
of our guys, including Adalberto (Gordo) Villaescusa (FR)
have a viable shot at placing in the top 8, nationally, and
earning All-American status" stated Coach Petty.
Representing the Eagles at
Nationals will be 3 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 2 juniors and
head coach Petty and his staff. "We are a youthful team
and staff that is extremely disciplined and hard working.
Considering the academic load our student-athletes bear,
they have done very well this season." When Coach Petty
states "this season" he is not only speaking of
the competition, he is also referring to the transition the
team has undergone in adjusting to a new coach with a different
coaching style and ideology - on and off the mat. The team's
philosophy is based on the three cornerstones of Character,
Academic and Athletic excellence. "I feel good about
our wrestling accomplishments this season, but I feel much
better about the student-athletes that made it through the
entire season with the high demands and expectations placed
on them in the area of Character and Academics."
Eagles Finish Third at Regional
Tournament
(Ashland, OR 2/14/04) Although,
a very young squad with 5 freshmen and l sophomore and short
handed with 3 athletes missing from the line up, the Eagles
still traveled into Ashland Oregon over the weekend for the
Western Regional Tournament with "no excuses" in
an attempt to capture a team Regional Championship.
The Eagles finished the tournament
in 3rd place with 3 individual champions out of ten weight
classes. The champions were Tyler Moran, (JR, l49 lbs.),
David Rivera (JR,174 lbs.) and Robert Charlton (SO, 197 lbs.),
who all happen to be roommates this year. "These three
young men have been very good for our youthful team by providing
leadership on and off the mat. I am very impressed with Tyler
this season as he has lead by example in the classroom earning
a 3.0 GPA (B average) for the semester while currently leading
the team in wins (27) and appearing in 4 championship matches.
I think his performance will become contagious throughout
our program and it will become the norm to be successful
on the mat and in the classroom and in life", stated
Coach Petty. Moran was also voted the Western Regional Outstanding
Wrestler by the coaches. "We look at all of our individual
accolades as team successes. While I am happy for Tyler,
I also know he had a good group of partners - teammates,
alumni, and coaching staff - pushing him to improve and perform.
He has represented ERAU very well this season," commented
Coach Petty.
The goal is to continue their
winning ways into the National Championships in two weeks
when the Eagles will take 7 athletes to Great Falls, Montana
in a bid to compete for a National Championship. The other
4 wrestlers who will be joining Moran, Rivera and Charlton
will be Richard Byrd (FR, 125 lbs.), returning All-American,
Anthony Archuleta (SO, 133 lbs.), Gordo Villaescusa (FR,
141 lbs.), and Joffre Lander (FR, 184 lbs.). "We have
seven strong All-American candidates and a few who if they
perform well at the tournament, have a legitimate shot at
being named National Champions. It all comes down to one
final tournament and hopefully our guys are peaking at the
right time and that's in two weeks in Montana at the Championships",
remarked Coach Petty. Adam Neesby is also an Academic All-American
candidate for the 2003-04 season.
The Eagles finish the year
6-5 in Dual meet competitions and placed 13th in the tough
Reno Tournament of Champions, 10th at the California Invitational,
5th at the Wheaton, IL Invitational, 3rd at the Menlo Tournament
and 3rd at the Regional Championships.
Eagle Wrestlers 5th at Wheaton Invitation
Chicago, Illinois (2/7/04)
- The Eagles returned home from Chicago, Illinois on Sunday
after placing 5th out of a field of 26 teams at the oldest
tournament in the nation, the Wheaton Invitational, which
included 3 of the top 5 NAIA teams in the nation, 5 ranked
Division III teams and 3 ranked Division II teams.
In route to winning the 5th
place trophy, the Eagles placed 6 of 9 wrestlers that entered
the tournament on the medal platform. Tyler Moran (149) and
Robert Charlton (197) both placed second, Richard Byrd (125)
and David Rivera (174) were 3rd Anthony Archuleta was 6th
and Gordo Villaescusa finished 7th.
This was the final regular
season tournament for the young Eagles, which include 5 freshman,
2 sophomores and 2 juniors. "We are a very young team,
but we compensate with hard work. I feel the guys are peaking
at the right time. Up until now, everything else has just
been good practice," Coach Petty states as he leads
the Eagles to Ashland, Oregon, this weekend to compete in
the Far Western Region Championships.
"Even though we are a
young team and we have lost some key players due to injuries,
we are not a program that neither makes nor accepts excuses;
our goals will remain the same-team Regional and National
Championships with individual Champions, All-Americans and
Academic All Americans."
The Eagles will compete against
2 nationally ranked teams in Menlo College, #5 and Southern
Oregon #6, in their Regional Champions this weekend on Saturday,
February 14, 2003. The top 3 individuals in each of the 10
weight classes, unless already qualified, will advance to
the National Championships on February 26 & 27, 2004
in Great Falls, Montana.
Embry-Riddle wrestlers improve to 6-3
after solid performance in Tucson.
The Eagles traveled to Tucson
on Saturday to face both Pima and Glendale in a three way
meet. The matches were featured during one of the states
most prominent high school wrestling tournaments at Flowing
Wells High School. The Eagles had a good showing, winning
both matches in front of a packed gymnasium. "I think
the event was good for college wrestling in Arizona and Embry-Riddle
as it gave us a chance to showcase our program during a great
high school event. We also got a chance to do some recruiting
and promote the University, stated Coach Petty."
The eagles had solid performances
from the team as the welcomed back returning "All-American" Anthony
Archuleta (133lbs.) in his first competition since recovering
from an injury. Archuleta went 2-0 and looked in rare form
for his first live competition of the season. "It is
nice to have Anthony back in the line up. He brings so much
to the team with his experience, energy and leadership. We
will need both him and Jaime Hernandez (184lbs.) if want
a shot at cracking the top 5 at Nationals. Our team is young,
but we have been maturing and if we can get healthy, we will
be very competitive as we head into the final stretch of
our season.
Other Eagles who won two matches
were Robert Charlton (197lbs.) and Joffre Lander (184lbs.)
who have improved tremendously since arriving ERAU. Joffre
was a projected red shirt freshman who stepped in to fill
a slot when Hernandez's injury occurred. "He has done
a great job for the team while also getting above a 3.0 GPA
in his first semester; I think that is awesome, stated Petty."

ASU Sundevil Dual Tournament Review
TEMPE, AZ-1/4/04- The Eagles
began the New Year facing three Division I teams at ASU's
annual team tournament. The Young Eagles started the tournament
with a defeat from one of the top teams and host ASU by a
score of 12-32. There were three ERAU wrestlers that recorded
victories, Richard Byrd (FR-125lbs.) who took on an older
and heavier opponent (SR-133lbs.) won by a 14-8 decision,
Morgan Scott (FR-157lbs.) who followed the same script as
Byrd by defeating an older and heavier opponent (JR-165lbs.)
won by mentally and physically dominating the ASU wrestler.
Scott who fell behind in the first period refused to stop
coming after his opponent causing him to call time out to
catch his breath and was warned for stalling twice and delay
of match, ultimately getting the very frustrated ASU grappler
disqualified for flagrant misconduct which gave Scott the
6-point victory. David Rivera (JR-174lbs.) was the third
ERAU wrestler who won 7-2 by dominating his opponent from
the onset of the match. Tyler Moran (JR-149lbs.) dropped
a close-tough decision to one of ASU's top wrestlers.
Next the Eagles faced American
University (Div.I - Washington, D.C.) and proved victorious
by a 23-18 margin. Robert Charlton (SO-197lbs.) got on the
winning track by dominating his opponent with a technical
fall 19-3. Freshman Jarrod Tavasci (125lbs.) who has been
hampered by injuries recorded his first Eagle dual meet victory
of the year by a score of 14-11. Adalberto (Gordo) Villaescusa
(FR-141lbs.) won 8-4 by controlling his opponent throughout
the entire match. Scott, Eugene Garza (FR) and Danny Eller
(SO) each received forfeit victories to help the Eagles secure
the match.
The Eagles dropped their final
match to Stanford University by a score of 7-46. Charlton,
once again was dominant in defeating his opponent 9-1 for
a 4 point major decision. The other Eagle victory came from
Moran who edged his opponent by a 5-4 margin. "We gained
a tremendous amount of experience out of this tournament.
Going 1-2 and while being the only non-division I team at
the tournament is not bad. This type of competition will
only help us to grow and improve as our season heads into
the final stretch."
The Eagles now 4-3 on the season
will travel to Tucson next on 1/17/04 to take on Pima and
Glendale College as a special event at one of Arizona's top
high school tournaments, Flowing Wells Tournament.
Menlo Tournament Review
The Eagles continued their
five-day road trip by heading to California after participating
in the toughest tournament on their schedule to include Nationals
as stated by Coach Petty. "To be the best you have to
wrestle the best and the tournament selection we choose will
help prepare us to achieve our team goals." The Eagles
finished the tournament with three individual Champions in
Tyler Moran-149#, David Rivera-174# and Robert Charlton-197#.
Other placers included Adalberto Villaescusa-141# (3rd),
Morgan Scott-157# (4th), Joffre Lander-184# (4th), Richard
Byrd-125# and Jarrod Tavasci-125 (tied 5th). Although no
team was kept the Eagles were easily in the top three.
The Eagles added two more names
(Rivera and Villaescusa) to the National qualifiers list
to join Charlton and Moran who will compete for national
titles this Feb 27 & 28, 2004. The team will have an
eight-day break for Christmas before returning for winter
training camp to prepare for the ASU Sun Devil Duals on Jan.
4, 2004. The Eagles will dual Stanford University, American
University and ASU in Tempe on the 4th beginning at 10 AM.

Eagles schedule and to keep up to date with the teams' progress.
Reno Tournament of Champions Review
The Eagles returned home after
a five-day, two tournament, road trip to Reno, Nevada (12/18)
and Menlo, California (12/20). The overall results were very
positive as stated by Coach Petty. "Our entire continues
to improve and gain confidence week by week. We are right
on track as we have set in our peaking chart and the key
is to peak at the right time, which is at the Regional and
National Tournaments. We also will be adding some old, but
new faces to our squad, which will help us to fill some holes
and add depth. The additions are: Anthony Archuleta-133#,
Eugene Garza-141#, Jamie Hernandez-184# and Ric Carreon-HWT
(a 2002 team member who is returning to ERAU after being
activated by the US Marines and serving in the War.)"
In the Reno Tournament of Champions
the Eagles finished 13th which included some of the top teams
in Division I (Oklahoma State#1 and ASU #7) while finishing
tied with Southern Oregon University who is ranked #6 in
the Nation (NAIA) and ahead of all other non-Division I teams.
Tyler Moran was the highest Eagle placer (3rd) with a 5-1
record and Robert Charlton finished 6th in the tough field.
Eagles Rebound Defeat Pima College
The Eagles look much
improved a few days after battling the University of Iowa
as they soundly defeated the Pima College Aztecs. It was
almost as if the Eagles borrowed a page or two from the
Iowa Hawkeyes. "We really benefited from Iowa coming
to town. You can talk about it until you are blue in the
face, but until you actually experience it, then it is
all talk." The "it" Coach Petty was referring
to was the physical dominant style of wrestling that the
Iowa team employed on the Eagles. "After I was hired,
in the first meeting I had with the team, I expressed to
them that this was the style I would expect our team to
possess. After hearing about it, then seeing it used by
the best in college wrestling, we as a team now understand
and are beginning to execute as expected."
The Eagles won 8 of 10 official matches on their way to a 41-9 victory,
which is almost the exact opposite of the Iowa score, One of the victories
was posted by senior All-American Marcel Suehiro in his final home match
in the Activity Center. "Marcel completed his home stand in good fashion.
This is the best he has performed all year; he is really turning it on.
If he keeps this pace and continues to work hard in practice, he'll easily
repeat as an All-American this season," said Coach Petty.
The Eagles improved to 3-1
on the season before the final exam break. The team returns
to action on December 18, 2003 when they travel to Reno,
Nevada to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions and
then to Atherton, California to compete in the Menlo Team
Duals Friday 19th and Invitational Tournament set on December
20th before the Christmas break.
Results:
125- Suehiro win De La Pena 12-1
133- Byrd win Forfeit
141- Villaescusa loss Medina 5-7
149- Moran win Merchant 15-1
157- Scott win Jimenez 11-4
165- Forfeit loss Varner
174- Rivera win Forfeit
184- Lander win Wine OT Inj. Def.
197- Charlton win Forfiet
Byrd flies solo to earn the only win
for the Eagles in 6-41 defeat vs. Iowa
Although the score did not
indicate it, the fact remains the same; the young Eagles
are growing up. Coach Petty stated "I am pleased with
our effort at this point in the season and the fact that
we took on the now #1 team in college (Div. I) wrestling.
I expected this when I put the Hawkeye's on our schedule.
They are the best and to be the best you have to compete
against the best. This experience will only help us to improve
as we prepare to wrestle teams in our division (NAIA). We
wrestled every match tough and did not just lay down for
the 'Champs'."
Even the Hawkeye's coaching
staff was impressed with the effort put up by the overpowered
Eagles. "Most smaller division teams do not battle us
as tough as you did. I expect you guys to do well in your
division" stated Jim Zalesky, Head Coach of Iowa. Assistant
Coach and 1996 Olympic Gold medallist Tom Brands stated "your
team out hustled us throughout the match." Petty replies "as
a Head Coach, you have to feel good about your teams' effort
and the comments coming from a program like Iowa."
Freshman, Richard Byrd's match
was stopped 30 seconds into the first round due to his opponent
sustaining a rib injury. "We felt very confident about
several of the matches that we had a legitimate shop of winning
and Byrd's match was one of them. It is just unfortunate
that the young man could not finish the match." The
other matches that Coach Petty eluded to were Tyler Moran
who dropped a heart breaking 3-4 decision and Robert Charlton
who had an early 2-0 lead slip away for a 8-15 defeat.
Eagles host University of Iowa
The Hawkeyes come to the Eagle
Arena as the most decorated wrestling program in collegiate
history with 20 Division I Team National Titles, 59 individual
national champs, 199 All-Americans and 12 Olympians - one
who is currently on the Hawkeye coaching staff (1996 Gold
Medallist, Tom Brands).
The Young Eagles, under the guidance of first year coach John Petty have
decided that while history is good for the sport, "We'd like to keep
all of the records in the past and focus on the present." The Eagles
come into this match ranked 17th in the Nation (NAIA) with one returning
All-American in Marcel Suehiro (Sr. 125). Suehiro will face NCAA All-American
Luke Eustice in the 125 pound match. Also Eagle standout, Tyler Moran (JR)
will battle Luke Eustice's brother Ty in the 149 pound weight class, which
should prove to be a very exciting match. Coach Petty stated, "this
will be a good test for our program. Iowa exemplifies the style of aggressive
wrestling that I want our team to possess. We do not plan to just lay down.
No matter ... the outcome, I want to look back at this night and say 'our
team wrestled tough.' It will be a good experience for our program..."
ERAU Fall Wrestling clinic

School seniors (K-18). The cost will be $25 per person.

Robert Charlton Claims Bronze Medal
and Qualifies for 2004 NAIA Nationals
After recovering from knee
surgery, Robert Charlton was very hungry and anxious to see
his first action. That first action came in a dual meet against
CSU, Fullerton, with Charlton proving victorious in dominant
fashion with major decision (9-0) over his opponent helping
the Eagles win their second dual meet in as many attempts.
The next day Charlton continued his winning ways by mowing through his
completion to clam 3rd place in the 197 lb weight class of the California
Open, which qualified him for the NAIA Championships in February.
"This was a great tournament for Robert
and the rest of the guys" stated
Coach Petty. The tournament [was] comprised of approximately 300 athletes with
roughly 30 wrestlers in each weight division. The competition included Division
I programs from California and Arizona: Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, UC
Davis, Cal Poly, Stanford, Arizona State University and Division II CSU, Bakersfield. "It
was invaluable for our team to see this caliber of competition at this phase
in our season. It was validating for our guys to check where they are in their
training. Our control and positioning is steadily improving and our stamina was
unmatched in almost every match."
Results:
125 Byrd (3-2) 10th
125 Suehiro (1-2)
141 Villaescusa (0-2)
149 Moran (3-2) 5th

Eagles defeat Gauchos
The Fighting Eagle Wrestling
Team started the season smoking hot with a 48 to 3 victory
over Glendale College. It was their first win under new head
coach John Petty.
The Eagles came out battling with explosive shots from the start. They
fought hard with five of wrestlers recording pins. The one Eagle loss came
in a hard fought battle between two athletes giving all they had. McConkie
battled until the end in a tight match that ended with a close decision
going to the Glendale wrestler. The Eagles return to battle on Saturday
when they host their home tournament, the "20 & Under Open" at
the Eagle Gym (Activity Center).

2003-2004 Preview
The
Eagles qualified 10 wrestlers for the 2003 NAIA National
Championships in Great Falls, Montana and finished with four "All-Americans" this
past February. Despite a season filled with a tremendous
amount of adversity, the team still managed to finish the
season ranked 12th in the Nation. The Eagles will have 12
returnees including two "All-Americans" in senior,
Marcel Suehiro (125 lbs) and sophomore, Anthony Archuleta
(141 lbs), both placing 8th in the Nation. The Eagles also
add 9 new recruits to their roster, of which, all are State
medallist including 2 State Champions.
Hopes are high for the future as the Eagles welcome newly hired Head Coach
John Petty, a 1991 Fresno State graduate and wrestler. After a national
search for a Head Wrestling Coach, Athletic Director, Larry Stephen named
Coach Petty as the third head coach in the program's history. Coach Petty
comes to ERAU with a strong wrestling and aeronautical background as a
former All Army wrestler and aviation officer. With his philosophy and
priorities of good character, academic and athletics excellence, he feels
it is a perfect match between himself and the University. "I am very
excited and optimistic about our future. With the returning athletes and
the incoming freshman class, I like our chances. I expect this year to
be one of transition and growth, but I still like our chances this year.
We have signed several outstanding quality young men who will bring a great
deal of character and academic and athletic energy to our program." They
should fit well into Coach Petty's program, which emphasizes character
first, academics second, and athletics third. "You can be an 'A' student
and a National Champion, but if you lack character, you will not get very
far in life," comments Coach Petty.
The Eagles' new coaching staff will host some familiar faces. Past National
Champion and three-time "All-American," Pat Cadwallader, two-
time "All-American," Johnny Hurtado, and "All-American," BJ
Adams will assist Coach Petty in his inaugural year. "This is a good
group of young and talented coaches who are familiar with the program and
the returning student-athletes. I think they will be invaluable during
this year of transition and instrumental in taking the program to the next
level. Our goals are and will always be to #1 - graduate good citizens,
#2 - produce Academic and Athletic All-Americans, #3 - produce individual
National Champions and #4 - win a National Team Title." The Eagles'
2003-2004 schedule includes some of the top teams in the Nation, to include
Division I powerhouses, University of Iowa and Arizona State as they prepare
to capture the first National Title in school history.
