15TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS (October 1st, 2004)
With 96 participants, and a cool, crisp, clear day at
exclusive Talking Rock Ranch Golf Course, the 15th Annual
Alumni Golf Tournament was a huge success Friday October
1.
In an effort to continue improving the already quality
status of the Octoberwest Alumni Golf Tournament, all participants
(alumni, sponsors, dignitaries, students, and family) were
greeted at the parking lot and escorted to the registration
table and golf carts. Over 25 student athletes actively
supported this very successful tournament from start to
finish.
The day started out in dramatic fashion – Stan Archuleta, Uncle of student
athlete Anthony Archeluta sank the first putt, on the first attempt at the
long putting contest to win a Ping G2i putter.
The 8:00 start allowed play to flow smoothly as everyone enjoyed the spectacular
views of the surrounding area, exquisite shape of the course and challenging
speed of the immaculate greens. Following play, a luncheon and awards ceremony
was held on the patio of the clubhouse.
Thor Andersen, a senior Aeronautical Science major, his brother Erik and their
two guests Ryan Abts and Paul Hinz captured low round with a score of 60. Second
place went to the team sponsored by Yavapai Gaming, Floyd James, Marty James,
Jim Noe and Lonnie Morgan, who finished 2 strokes behind at 62. Coming in third
at 63 was the team made up of flight instructors: Dylan Miller, Steve Cavoretto,
Ted Sullivan and Bill Dale. Top score of the tournament went to the parent
team of Rolf and Barb Scovell, Larry McCracken, his son and current student
Chris with 92.
Closest to the pin winners included:
Alumni Ron Ploci (Ping Gi-2 putter), Parent Dr. Wayne Fischer (Ping Hoofer
golf bag), Staff member Kevin Blake ($50 gift certificate), and Guest Floyd
James (Ping Hoofer golf bag). Long drive was won by Guest Rob Bowe for the
second year in a row.
Typical with the spirit of cooperation, Alumni Robert Sanducci, won an ERAU
logo Hoofer Golf bag during the alumni raffle. A few minutes later, Robert
won another Hoofer bag during the raffle and immediately donated it back to
the raffle to allow another participant to win the prize. This unselfish act
was greatly appreciated by the participants who applauded Robert for his generous
donation.
Over $12,000 was raised for student scholarships. $2,500 was donated to the
Bob Sweginnis/Mike Corradi Memorial scholarship fund on behalf of the golf
tournament.
Four outstanding student athletes Maria Ngomba, Clay Elliot, Morgan Scott and
Adam Neesby were awarded $2000 Champion of Character scholarships – which
honors students who adhere to the five core values of the Champion of Character
initiative supported by the NAIA – Servant Leadership, Sportsmanship,
Integrity, Respect and Responsibility. Each of the scholarship recipients was
present to assist with tournament operations and was introduced to the players,
while excerpts from their application essay and faculty recommendations were
shared with the golfing participants.
The tournament committee would like to thank our sponsors: Chartwell’s – our
Titanium Sponsor, Rocky’s Landscaping, Well’s Fargo Bank, Yavapai
